Three answers, and three looks
Three questions, three looks drawn around your own name, and one press to keep the one you want.
What it is
Setup asks three things: your name or your company name, what you do said the way you would say it to somebody at a table, and who you help. Everything the first screen makes can be made from those, and asking for more is how a form becomes a thing people decide to finish later. If you already have a website you can hand that over instead and we read what we can from it, and if you do not, nothing on the screen suggests you are missing something.
Then three looks, on a real post
The next screen shows three complete looks, each one drawn as an actual post carrying the name you just typed, in the colors and the typefaces that look would give you. They are pictures of your own work rather than color swatches, which is the difference between choosing a brand and guessing at one. One of the three is already chosen when the screen opens, with a short line saying why it was picked.
One press answers the whole screen
Keep this look is the only loud button on the page, and it is aimed before you arrive, so somebody who has been here ninety seconds and has no design opinion is not asked to develop one. Everything else is quieter on purpose. If you would rather not decide at all, the quiet skip keeps the recommended look rather than leaving your project without one, because everything you make afterward has to be drawn in something.
Nothing here is a design process
You are not asked to approve a wireframe, sit through a prototype, or wait on research before you are allowed to look good. That sequence is right for somebody building a product and wrong for somebody who came to post, and the old order asked a person to review three things that were not for them before reaching the one that was. This is the whole of it: three answers, three looks, one press.
Seeing them and keeping one cost nothing
Neither screen spends credits. The looks are drawn for you, and keeping one writes it to your project, and neither of those is billed, which matters because the plan most people arrive on carries no credits at all and a welcome screen that charged for itself would be a wall with a ribbon on it.
When they are house looks, it says so
Occasionally the looks cannot be built around you, because something was slow or something failed. You still get three, and the screen says plainly that these are our house starting points rather than looks designed for you. Presenting a fallback as though it were tailored is the sort of small untruth a person notices exactly once, and then stops believing the rest of the screen.
Your first post is waiting when you land
Keeping a look takes you to Posts with a post already in it, composed from the three things you typed and set in the look you just chose. It costs nothing, because your own sentence is being set in type rather than written for you, and it is a draft: nothing is scheduled, nothing is published, and no connected account hears about it until you say so. A look you cannot see is a color in a database, which is the whole reason the screen ends this way.
It is saved once and reaches everything after it
The palette and the typefaces are saved on your project, so the pictures you compose, the page about you, your posts and anything else you make later all come out of the same look rather than out of two settings screens. Change it whenever you like from the design lock chip on your project, which also shows you each value and where it came from, and the next thing you make picks the change up.
Common questions
How long does it take?
The looks arrive in seconds rather than minutes. If they take longer than that, you are shown our house starting points with a line saying that is what they are, instead of being left watching a spinner.
What if I do not like any of the three?
Keep the closest one and change it afterward from the design lock chip, where you can set the colors and typefaces by hand. Nothing you make before that change is stuck with the old look: the next thing you make reads the new one.
Does choosing a look cost credits?
No. Seeing the three, keeping one, and the first post that arrives with it are all free, because your own words are being set in type rather than written for you.
Can I skip it?
Yes. The quiet skip keeps the look we recommended, so you are never left with a project that has no look and no way to draw anything.
Do I need to approve a prototype first?
No. Nothing has to be designed, researched or approved before you have a look, a page and a post. That order was the wrong way round for anybody who came here to be seen rather than to build.
